The new district assignments for basketball and football were recently released by the Missouri High School Activities Association.Wright City saw more drastic changes than its county rival, with most of Warrenton’s schedule makeover coming on the hardwood. The Wildcats slate saw a shakeup in opponents in both sports.Wright City Activities Director Doug Smith says the new pairings bring in a pair of quality gridiron teams, Centralia and Macon, but also see the departure of a school that has dominated in recent seasons.“Berkeley has run away with it the last two years,” said Smith. “We’re fine with the (new teams). As a football program, we’re trending up, so we need to be ready for whoever is put in front of us.”The Wildcats’ new football district field also includes O’Fallon Christian, Duchesne, Missouri Military Academy, Orchard Farm and Winfield.Wright City’s basketball district shifts the Wildcats back toward the east, after having played at Hermann this past winter against several central Missouri opponents.Potential district foes on the hardwood for the next two seasons include O’Fallon Christian, Duchesne, Elsberry, Lutheran St. Charles, North Tech, Orchard Farm and Winfield.“The addition of North Tech will provide its own challenges, because they’ve been very solid on both the boys and girls sides,” said Smith. “We’re at the point in basketball where we’re trying to build into a competitive program.”He says it’s crucial for the Wildcats to go out concerned with only what they can control and letting the rest fall into place.“Hopefully we don’t end up in a situation where we end up having to travel,” said Smith.Warrenton saw only one change to its football district field, with the addition of the new Liberty High School in Wentzville. The remaining schools consist of Hannibal, Helias, Kirksville, Marshall, Mexico and Moberly.“It’s a tough district to be in, but we control our own destiny as far as where we’re going to be placed,” said Warrenton Football Coach Steve McDowell. “It’s what we do weeks one through nine that determines what position we put ourselves heading into the district.”He anticipates Hannibal and Helias to be the two most imposing teams that the Warriors were prefer avoid heading into the postseason.“Our goal this year is to be one of those Top 4 teams within our district,” said McDowell. “The past two years that’s been an attainable goal even though our record hasn’t been that shiny.”The Warriors basketball assignment sends them back toward the west, placed among five North Central Missouri Conference schools. Potential opponents include Fulton, Hannibal, Kirksville, Mexico and Moberly.“I think it’s a good move for us, even though we have to travel a little more,” said Activities Director Bobby Spoonster. “Now most of the teams we’re not going to see until our district. We won’t be facing so many common opponents.”DISTRICTS ANNOUNCEDFile Image.
