Motorists face residue of snowstorm during Monday morning's commute

A winter storm brought nearly a foot of snow, frigid temperatures and icy roads to Warren County and the region and motorists faced the residue of that event during Monday morning's commute.Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation continue plowing and treating state highways in the region but have had to adjust their approach because of frigid temperatures that make salt and other chemical treatments ineffective on the roadways. Late Sunday, crews were primarily plowing and using sand and cinders to provide traction on snow-packed roadways.Road conditions were not back to normal, and MoDOT encouraged motorists to use caution if they went to work on Monday morning.St. Louis District Maintenance Engineer Becky Allmeroth said most area interstates and major routes were completely covered. "Drifting and blowing snow and temperatures below freezing have made this storm challenging. This combination makes driving hazardous," she said. "Most of our less-traveled numbered and lettered routes have also been plowed but may still be covered with due to drifting and blowing snow."MoDOT will continue working around the clock until roads are restored to near-normal conditions. "I would encourage everyone to be very careful, give our snow plows plenty of room, and check on road conditions if you do have to travel," said Allmeroth. When temperatures dip this low, getting stranded on the side of the road can be very dangerous. Before you head out, equip your vehicle with an emergency kit and let a friend or family member know when and where you're traveling, MoDOT advised. One way to prepare for winter travel is to check MoDOT's Traveler Information Map, located at http://www.modot.org/. The map offers real-time views of road conditions for Missouri's interstates and major highways. For smartphone and tablet users, MoDOT's Traveler Information App brings the same information to your mobile devices. Users can select road condition and work zone options from the map's legend, and view the same cameras and message boards found on desktop version of the map. The app is available for free at the iPhone App Store and Android Marketplace.Travelers can also pick up the phone and call MoDOT's toll-free customer service center at 888-ASK-MODOT (888-275-6636). Customer service representatives are available to give road conditions updates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.Motorists face residue of snowstorm during Monday morning's commute
