Organizers of two first-ever events in Wright City had their plans dampened by major rain over the weekend. The Red, Wright and Blue Motorcycle Fest has been rescheduled for Aug. 19. It was originally planned for April 29 at Cedar Lake Cellars winery in Warren County, but rain throughout the prior week and the forecast of a downpour over the weekend made the motorcycle event a nonstarter.“We waited as long as we could, hoping that the rain would move north or south, but no chance,” said state Rep. Bryan Spencer in a press release. Spencer is a chief driver of the event. The motorcycle festival was conceived as a way of raising money for the Wright City Police Department to purchase a new police dog. The department’s current K9 officer, Zeus, is approaching retirement due to health concerns. Organizers hope for the festival to become a yearly fundraiser, and that the second date will be enough to get it rolling.“Pray for a nice day on Aug. 19. Too many people have worked too hard and too many people invested money to make this day a huge success; we can’t have it rain on our event,” Spencer said. The Wright City Special Olympics track meet originally was scheduled for Friday, April 28, but has been pushed back two weeks to May 12.Organizer Jennifer Werner said the people running the Olympics met at the Wright City High School athletic facility Friday at 6:45 a.m. to judge if conditions were too wet for the event. The planned athletics include jumping, throwing, running and an obstacle course, much of which would take place on the facility’s football field. Wet conditions made those competitions unfeasible, so event administrators decided it would be best to reschedule, Werner said.Plans for the Special Olympics remain otherwise unchanged, Werner said. The opening ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. May 12 at the Wright City High School athletic complex.Rescheduled Events
