All is well after a fire at Cascades Plastics in Truesdale Wednesday morning. The fire produced a thick layer of black smoke and damaged to the building. No one was injured. The plant, located at 7501 S. Spoede Lane in Truesdale, manufactures polystyrene foam containers for food packaging and recycles materials like container boards, plastics, paper and cans.“There was a lot of smoke. Tin on the outside of the building melted but they are still operational,” said Mike Owenby, chief of the Warrenton Fire Protection District.Owenby said the fire likely started in a recycling silo connected to the building, He said the contents in one silo, Styrofoam products, produce static electricity which can create a spark. He said that could have been the cause of this fire.“Employees saw the fire this morning and put it out. They thought they had put it out,” Ownenby said. But it returned and got bigger. That was when they called the fire department.Firefighters had the fire extinguished in about 5 minutes, Owenby said.Building is designed for fire safety; “That building has the largest sprinkler system I’ve seen, and employees are trained in fire safety,” Owenby said.Cascades Plastics employs about 95 people. The plant is 158 thousand square feet.Fire at Cascades PlasticsPhoto submitted by Jennifer Junker.
