Morgan Nute finishes in second at state golf; Wright City heads to district championship

Morgan Nute’s high school golf journey is now complete.

Like any good journey, Nute’s experience got better with each step.

After a fourth-place finish as a freshman and identical third-place finishes her sophomore and junior years, Nute finished as the runner-up during the MSHSAA Class 2 state tournament, which was contested at Bogey Creek Golf Club in Farmington on Monday and Tuesday.

“I am very proud of being top 4 all four years at state, and doing better each year,” Nute said in the wake of her tournament finish,” Nute said. “This is the first year I’ve gotten second at state and it is the only time I’ve been under par at state as well, so I am very happy with that.”

Nute had a 36-hole score of 143, which was bettered by only state champion Sara Kolar of Maplewood-Richmond Heights, who shot 136.

The par-72 course total helped Nute finish 1-under-par. After opening the tournament with a three-under-par 69 and being in a tie for the lead after the first day, Nute was two-over on Day 2.

“Today didn’t go quite as well as yesterday,” Nute said. “I just wasn’t making many putts, but I am still proud of keeping my overall score under par for both days.”

Just as she had on Day 1, Nute birdied holes No. 11 and 14.  She added 12 pars and four bogeys in the round.

Mellegaard has strong state showing

Makayla Mellegaard, the Warrenton junior, finished in the top half of the field at the MSHSAA Class 3 girls’ golf tournament on Tuesday at Meadow Lake Acres Country Club in New Bloomfield.

Her 46th-place finish put her ahead of 50 golfers in the 96-golfer field.

Overall, she carded a two-day total of 192 strokes to finish in a tie for the 46th spot.

The 95 she shot on the second day was a two-stroke improvement over her opening round.

Warrenton’s softball run ends short of district title

One day after knocking off top-seeded Washington, the Warrenton softball team fell in the Class 4 District 3 championship game at Borgia to St. Dominic by a 4-0 score.

Brooklyn Young recorded the only hit for Warrenton (14-14) as the Warriors held the game scoreless through three innings before St. Dominic broke through.

Hannah Gibson pitched for Warrenton, allowing the four runs on seven hits while striking out five.

Wright City pulls upset to make district championship

A massive six-run fourth inning ripped open a tie game as third-seeded Wright City ran past No. 2 seed Bowling Green in the teams’ Class 3 District 3 semifinal at Winfield.

The Wildcats (15-13) will play top-seeded and host Winfield for the district championship at 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

In the semifinal win, the Wildcats turned four fourth-inning doubles into five runs to turn a four-all tie on its ear.

Harper Martin, Ava Swearingen, and Lorelai Kellner each provided an RBI double in the inning, while Emalee Swor also added a two-base hit in the frame.

Martin also singled in the first, tripled in the third and doubled in the seventh.

Martin, Kellner and Swearingen each drove in three in the victory.

In the circle, Kellner tossed the complete game, allowing six runs on 14 hits while striking out 10.

As for the opposition on Wednesday, Winfield leads Wright City 10-8 in the series, including a 10-1 district semifinal win in 2024.
