A couple of county races have emerged for the August primary election after several last-minute candidates filed Tuesday. The filing deadline for county and state offices was Tuesday, March 30. The primary election will be held Aug. 3, with the general election to follow on Nov. 2. Three candidates are now vying for the presiding commissioner seat. Republican Tom Hoeft filed on the final day and will square off against Incumbent Arden Engelage and former Southern District Commissioner Randy Lewis. Races also have formed for circuit clerk, treasurer and recorder of deeds. Republicans Brenda Eggering, currently the deputy circuit clerk, and Meg Lefferdink, a former Warrenton alderman, will face incumbent Jerri Jordan for the circuit clerk position. For treasurer, Jackie Stewart has filed to run against incumbent Gene Cornell for the Republican nomination. Five candidates have filed for recorder, a new position created when the county commission voted last year to separate the duties from the circuit clerk. Linda Gant, a former planning and zoning officer, was the last person to file for the Republican nomination. She will oppose Deborah Engemann and Lynn Bernard. Stuart Schwartz and Michelle Walch will battle for the Democratic nomination. Incumbents who have no opposition are Associate Circuit Judge Wes Dalton, County Clerk Barb Daly, Prosecuting Attorney Mike Wright and Collector Linda Stude. All four are Republicans. Three Republicans are seeking the 99th House of Representative seat held for the past eight years by Mike Sutherland. The candidates include Sutherland's mother, Jan Sutherland, Bart Korman and Rick Smith. Six individuals are seeking to replace John Griesheimer in the 26th District senate seat. The field includes Republicans Brian Nieves, Dick Stratman, Donald Meyer and Jack Jackson, Democrat George (Boots) Weber, and Richard Newton, who has filed under the Constitution party.
