More candidates join races for local offices

Posted

After the first week of open filing, several more candidates have come forward to seek leadership positions for local towns, school districts and emergency service boards.

Candidate filing is open until Jan. 21 for local municipal elections April 7, 2020.

In particular, races for the Warren County R-III School Board are already getting competitive. Meanwhile, a small number of offices don’t yet have any official candidates.

In the R-III school district, four people are now competing for three seats on the board. Newcomer Samuel Palmer threw his hat in the ring last week. He will compete against incumbents Laurie Wenzel, Rodger Tucker and Franci Schwartz for three available three-year terms on the school board.

One additional seat on the R-III board is up for a two-year term after the death of Allan Dreyer. Candidates Sarah Janes and Joseph Lanigan filed on the first day.

Here is the state of the races in other elections around Warren County.

City of Warrenton

So far, one person is running for board of aldermen seats in each of the city’s three wards. They are newcomer Joshua Poor (Ward 1) and incumbents Scott Schulze  (Ward 2) and Bob Delaloye (Ward 3).

City of Wright City

Newcomers Robert Hamlin and Jermaine Johnson are currently competing for the position of Ward 1 alderman. Another newcomer, Ramiz Hakim, is currently the sole candidate for Ward 2 alderman.

Incumbents John O’Connor (Ward 1) and Tom Dixon (Ward 2) haven’t filed.

Mayor Dan Rowden has filed and so far is unchallenged for re-election.

Wright City R-II School District

Incumbents Heidi Hallemann, Alice Jensen and Michael Bates signed up last week to seek re-election to the R-II school board. Joining them in the race is Bryan Spencer, who currently serves as a state representative. Three seats on the board will be elected in April.

Wright City Fire Protection District

One seat is available on the fire district’s board of directors, and one candidate so far has filed, incumbent Jeanette Woehrle.

City of Marthasville

During the first week of filing, no candidates have yet registered to run for two seats on the Marthasville Board of Aldermen. That includes incumbents Nick Lange and Gene Jenkins.
