The cooking contest will take place at the Montgomery County Old Threshers Show on Saturday Aug. 16, at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. The contest will begin at 9 a.m. with people’s choice judging starting at about 12:15 p.m. Attendees are welcome to watch and visit with the cooks.
This is the contest’s fifth year and with increased interest last year The Old Threshers hope to have more teams compete this year. The contest is similar to a barbeque cooking contest but using cast iron dutch ovens and using charcoal briquettes as the heat source.
The general public will be able to judge for themselves by donating to the Central Missouri Honor Flight for a tasting plate. Attendees are welcome to visit with contestants and let them share how they are cooking and ask for tips on the process.
The three categories this year are pork loin, vegetable casserole and quick bread. All the items need to be completed by noon.
This year we will also have the “Stone Soup” story told and will need participants in helping make the soup. Cooking for the soup begins at 9:30 am at the same location the contest will be going on in the area south of the north gate from the parking lot.
Many folks enjoy cooking in dutch ovens at deer camp, on their patio, when they do camp out or can make a party of gathering folks for a pot luck dinner.
