MoDOT: Hopewell Hill project ahead of schedule

Record Managing Editor A project to realign a stretch of Highway 47 at Hopewell Hill is ahead of schedule, according to a MoDOT project update. MoDOT officials now estimate that the portion of the highway may be closed two weeks earlier than initially planned. The original time line had the 18-day closure beginning on July 29. According to MoDOT, the contractor believes if weather and ground conditions hold out, the closure period could take as little as 12 to 14 days and begin in mid-July. Traffic will be detoured on Routes O and M. The $2.345-million project, located between Warrenton and Marthasville, consists of eliminating two sharp S curves, and for 11-foot driving lanes with 4-foot shoulders to be constructed along the six-tenths of a mile section. The tentative schedule calls for the realignment project to be completed on Aug. 16. Work on the east side of Highway 47 has begun as well. Rough grading was recently completed on a 200-foot section of the new highway east of the existing road. MoDOT officials reported as the contractor continues excavating through rock during the next week or two, they will begin hauling fill material to the northern portion of the project. This work will take place off the highway, according to MoDOT. Officials noted that the quality of the rock encountered by contractors is not as good as what was expected and additional material is having to be removed.
