Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation's (MoDOT) Northeast District recently announced that existing roadways will be maintained, but no new construction is planned. MoDOT recently released the draft of its Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) which lists all projecs planned by state and regional planning agencies for a five-year period. In Northeast Missouri, the project listing is significantly different than it was just four years ago," said Kevin James, MoDOT assistant district engineer for the Northeast District, which includes Warren County. "With funding nearly half of what it was then, we have shifted to maintaining our existing highway and bridge system the best we can with the resources we have available." However, James noted that there are several miles of major and minor highways which will be resurfaced. "We are creating and paving shoulders on some projects, and there are more than two dozen bridge repair or replacement projects," James said. "Theree just isn't enough funding to support highway expansion and major upgrades." The public is invited to comment on the proposed five-year program until May 31 at http://on.mo.gov/12jyVc2. Following the public review period, the comments will be presented to the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission (MHTC). MHTC officials will review the comments and the final draft of the transportation program before voting at the July 10 meeting in Rolla.
