Going 2-1 in the preseason, the Missouri Cyclones football team is preparing for its regular season opener. The Cyclones will host the Illinois Firehawks Saturday, June 1, at Borgia to open the Great Midwest Football League schedule. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. The Cyclones finished out their preseason with two road games, winning Saturday at the Sugar Creek Shockers, 15-8, but losing the previous Saturday in Des Moines to the host Blaze, 21-14. Sugar Creek Shockers getting a turnover near the goal line in the closing seconds, the Cyclones were able to seal a 15-8 victory to finish the preseason. Kelvin Williams opened scoring with a 100-yard interception return and the Cyclones added a two-point conversion to make it 8-0. That’s how things stood at the intermission. The Cyclones had other chances, but an interception and a missed field goal left the game at 8-0. The Cyclones also made stops in the red zone to keep Sugar Creek scoreless through one half. The Shockers got onto the board with a safety as quarterback Andy Mundwiller was sacked in the end zone. The Shockers then moved down the field, getting a 39-yard run to set up the tying touchdown. Deon Morris took over at quarterback and both teams missed scoring opportunities. The Cyclones missed a 44-yard field goal and the Shockers had a 27-yard attempt blocked by Williams. Williams blocked another field goal after the Cyclones fumbled the ball in their own territory. Morris found Mundwiller for a 20-yard touchdown pass and Kyle Duffy kicked the extra point to make it 15-8.In the closing minutes, the Shockers moved down to the two-yard line with 15 seconds to play, but fumbled on the next play and the Cyclones recovered.
