Warrenton’s annual Memorial Day Service will be held Monday, May 27, at the National Guard Armory, 1 Armory Road, Warrenton. The event is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and the public is invited to attend.Army Spec. Joshua O’Donnell, who now serves with the Army National Guard, will be the keynote speaker. O’Donnell is a veteran of U.S. operations currently in progress in Afghanistan. While serving overseas, O’Donnell earned a Purple Heart for wounds he sustained in combat. He also was awarded an Army Commendation Medal with a “V” for valor. Memorial Day has been celebrated since shortly after the end of the Civil War, when widows of Union and Confederate soldiers met to lay wreaths and say prayers for those killed during the conflict. The Memorial Day observance will close with a wreath-laying ceremony, a 21-gun salute and the playing of “Taps.” Memorial Day File Picture
