Austin Meine intends to make baseball a part of his life for as long as possible. The game has been ingrained into his routine since childhood, a trait he took from his dad, Kevin. Now the Wright City senior will follow in his father’s footsteps, pursuing a college baseball career.“Ever since I started playing baseball, I’ve wanted to play at the college level,” explained Meine. He recently signed a letter of intent to play college baseball for Meramec Community College.“When I visited there, I noticed they really put an emphasis on moving their players on to bigger programs,” Meine expressed. “That was important, and they also said I’d have a good shot at pitching.”He chose the two-year institution with plans of eventually transferring to a four-year school.A four-year varsity contributor for the Wildcats, Meine has pitched and played first base as well as shortstop.“He’s got a lot of talent and drive,” acknowledged Coach Dave Chapman. “He’s willing to put forth whatever it takes to get to the next level.”Meine helped guide Wright City to its first district championship game in seven years and is anxious to take the mound at the next level.“I’m really excited,” said Meine. “Meramec is a pretty good program, and they’ve had a lot of success the past few years. I feellike my work ethic is a big part of what’s going to help me continue to be successful.”He will be joining an Archers team that went 30-25 this spring.Meine, who carried a .91 ERA and was 6-1 as a starter this season, credits his select team, the St. Louis Pirates, for much of his success.“The Pirates helped me develop and get in touch with college coaches,” said Meine. “They gave me a lot of quality instruction on how to become a college baseball player.”He also once played for the Rawlings Prospects, often recording over 100 games during the summer months.Meine struck out 68 batters and walked just 12 as a senior. As a junior at Wright City, he made 11 starts, going 5-6. Meine sported a 2.19 ERA, striking out 89 and walking 15 batters.“He’s got a very good fastball and a great change-up,” added Chapman. “He’s got all the tools. It’s just a matter of perfecting the mechanics.”Meine also feels like his physical stature is an advantage. He has been the Wildcats’ top hitter the past two seasons, batting .491 with a team-best 27 hits and 25 RBIs during his senior campaign.“I feel like I have pretty good size, which you can’t teach,” said Meine. “I have a pretty good feel for three pitches already, and I can throw them for strikes consistently.”Meine becomes one of three members of this year’s senior class to ink a college baseball commitment.“He’s been a cornerstone for this program the past four years,” said Chapman. “The guys really looked up to him.”
