Election 2026

Meet Joseph Shepard, Ward 3 candidate for Warrenton Board of Aldermen

Posted

Name: Joseph Shepard

Age: 43

Hometown: Warrenton

Occupation: N/A

Position sought: Warrenton Ward 3 alderman

Previous political experience: None

Why are you running and why should people vote for you?

Warrenton residents deserve more direct say in how our city is governed. As a fourth-class city, we lack statutory tools like initiative and referendum, limiting citizens to hoping the Board acts on their concerns. I've spent recent months researching and advocating for upgrades — petitions for third class reclassification which would grant voter driven ordinances.

I'll prioritize transparency and accountability. I'll listen first, through regular ward meetings, surveys, and open door policies. I support practical improvements for responsible growth that preserves our small town feel, fiscal restraint, and policies that attract families and businesses without overregulating. I'll push for structural changes that will give voters lasting tools to address issues directly. My focus is on serving Ward 3 and all of Warrenton with integrity, not politics as usual.

What are your goals if elected?

Advocate for reclassification to third-class city status via Board ordinance, enabling initiative/referendum for citizens to propose or vote on key ordinances.

Improve transparency by requiring more public input on major decisions, live-stream additional meetings if needed, and publish clear budget breakdowns.

Promote fiscal responsibility: Scrutinize spending, seek grants/efficiencies, and keep taxes reasonable while funding essentials.

What issues are most pressing for your constituency?

Clear communication on budgets, contracts, and planning to build trust. Many feel disconnected, without initiative/referendum, residents rely solely on Board goodwill for changes like zoning or spending.
