Posted

Name: Frank Zykan

Age: 49

Hometown: Wright City

Occupation: Entrepreneur

Position sought: Wright City R-II School Board

Previous political experience: Lincoln County Republican Central Committee Chair 2024-Current, and Vice Chair 2022-2024

Why are you running and why should people vote for you?

My decision to run is rooted in a deep commitment to our students, their families, our educators, and all others who contribute to the success of our children. I firmly believe that successful students build successful communities. With many years of involvement in our school system as a proud parent of two current students, I understand both the opportunities and challenges we face.

In recent years I have gained valuable insights into school governance, and have collaborated effectively with teachers, administration, and board members to drive positive change. I will continue to advocate for what is best for our students and staff, and work with the board and administration in my commitment to our district’s growth, progress, and success.

I do not believe in vague statements which are designed to build support but lack specific evidence. I believe in tangible, measurable results which validate the success of one’s actions. I can cite many specific examples where I have saved our district money, improved transparency, engaged the public, and advocated for our students. I also maintain a regular presence throughout our district which allows me to witness our many successes as well as areas which I feel need attention.

What are your goals if elected?

Student achievement goals: Less than half of our students are proficient at grade level standards, and our state scores have declined consistently over the last 5 years. We must address attendance, educator turnover, student engagement, and classroom environment to reverse this trend. I would like to see a reduction in classroom technology, and the increased use of books, paper, and handwriting. I would also like to encourage more vocational and life skills educational opportunities.

Policy goals: I would like to see more of our policy return to local control. Many of our policies mirror that of other districts as they are written and distributed by the Missouri School Board Association. These policies are also only reviewed by our board in a limited manner on a recurring calendar basis. I feel that we should be responsible for drafting more of our own policies and engaging in policy review more frequently to ensure policies reflect current needs and community desires.

Fiscal responsibility goals: I would like to strengthen oversight to ensure the most responsible use of tax dollars.

Community goals: I would like to increase the participation between our district, our parents, and our community to improve public input and better align student achievement with patron expectations.

What issues are most pressing for your constituency?

Wright City students are struggling with reading, math, and science, with scores continuing to decline. Student achievement should be our number one priority. Words and slogans are no substitute for demonstrated actions. We must address academic performance gaps with solid instruction, proper support, adequate IEPs, and clear expectations.

Our children must be safe at school with a reduction of bullying and other disruptive behavior managed with effective intervention plans.

We must also be responsive and transparent with parents as it relates to curriculum, policies, and student progress, while making continuous efforts to build and strengthen school-parent partnerships.
