The Wright City football team lost their final regular season game 46-42 tonight against North Callaway. The game was back and forth, with both teams fighting until the final play.
North Callaway was the first team to score off a seven-yard run and a completed two-point conversion. It did not take the Wildcats long to respond. In the next play, Benji Rodriguez returned the ball to the 45-yard line from the kickoff.
Then, Jersiah Higgins caught a 19-yard pass from Dayton Humphreys, and Duan McRoberts finished the play and rushed into the endzone on an eight-yard drive.
At the end of the first, the Thunderbirds were up 8-7.
Starting the second quarter, McRoberts put up another touchdown from a 65-yard run and the Thunderbirds scored two more touchdowns. Going into halftime, the Wildcats were down 22-14.
Wright City came out strong in the second half. The Wildcats had a successful onside kick from McCory and possesed by Stephan Hamel. McRoberts capitalized on the opportunity and ran for a 48-yard touchdown in the next play. Then, McRoberts successfully ran for a two-point conversion. The score was tied 22-22.
North Callaway responded quickly for another touchdown and two-point conversion. McRoberts then rushed for a one-yard touchdown quickly after.
With about a minute left in the third, Grant Lehmen made a huge play and sacked the quarterback. The Wildcats ended the third trailing by two points.
Starting the fourth, the Thunderbirds scored a touchdown off their first play. Five minutes later, McRoberts scored his fifth touchdown of the night and Humphreys added on two additional points.
The Wildcats still trailed by two points.
With four minutes left, the Wright City defense made a goal line stop for a turnover on downs. However, the Wildcats offense fumbled the ball in the next, which led to North Callaway taking the ball back and scoring another touchdown.
This did not deter the Wildcats. With less than a minute left on the clock, Humphreys scored his first touchdown of the night. Wright City battled with North Callaway, but ultimately lost 46-42.
