Moments before stepping onto the awards stand, Brittany McPike quipped sarcastically to coach Sue Wright. Her No. 1 concern — whether or not her photo would now adorn the walls among the other all-state athletes in Wright City’s history.“You’re now enshrined at Wright City High School forever,” reassured Wright. “It’s very much a deserved honor.”The latest addition to an elite class, McPike accepted her medal as one of the more unsuspecting finalists during the MSHSAA Championships. She had finished seventh in the discus throw, relying on a top heave of 118 feet, 1 inch.“This is a great way to end my senior year,” said McPike. “I never thought I would do this, so it’s icing on the cake.”But a month ago, the thought of even making a trip to Jefferson City for the state meet seemed a stretch. McPike, who had consistently thrown around 100 feet all season, changed her spinning method the week before districts.“I think the key was that she was more relaxed,” said Wright. “Her work ethic gave her confidence, and she wasn’t so uptight.”McPike recorded a personal best of 106 feet at the district meet and followed with a phenomenal winning throw of 121 feet, 11 inches at sectionals.“For her to be able to be close to what she threw last week is incredible,” said Wright.McPike was determined to build on that mark, which had broken the school record of 115 feet, previously set by Gina Blanks in 1988.“I thought I could do better,” said McPike. “I’m happy that I did medal, but I was really hoping to increase my distance during my final meet.”McPike says she probably tossed around 300 practice throws during the week leading up to state.“It takes dedication,” said McPike. “It’s about mastering technique and focusing in.”Coming from a lineage of successful male athletes, McPike made certain to leave her own mark.“I’m so happy that I’m going to be on the All-State wall with my brother,” she said. “It was my goal, and I’m glad I accomplished it.”Shedding a few tears of joy following her final throw, McPike realized her journey had come to an end on the pinnacle of all stages.

Wright City senior Brittany McPike placed seventh in the discus throw at state on Friday.
