McCaskill should support Sessions

To The Editor:As Democratic leadership in the U.S. Senate feels the pressure from the radical left to continue the partisan gridlock in D.C., they seem to be taking aim at one of their colleagues, Sen. Jeff Sessions, who’s been nominated for U.S. attorney general. I urge Sen. Claire McCaskill to resist any pressure to join in on the despicable attacks.Sen. McCaskill has stood up to her party’s leadership in the past. She actually teamed up with Sen. Sessions himself to pass spending caps to fight the deficit – one of several measures she co-sponsored with him. The Sessions-McCaskill spending caps, as they were known, fell just one vote short. Sen. McCaskill should support Sen. Sessions as he faces the unfair charges of the unhinged left.Sen. Sessions’ qualifications to be attorney general are second to none. He was assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Alabama for two years (1975-1977). He was then nominated by President Ronald Reagan and confirmed by the Senate in 1981 as the U.S. attorney for Alabama’s Southern District, serving in that capacity for 12 years. In 1995, he was elected Alabama attorney general and then was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1997.In the Senate, Sen. Sessions has been nothing but stellar. He has led the efforts to confirm constitutional judges who will uphold justice and the law as written, instead of imposing personal preferences through judicial fiat. There is no question he is uniquely qualified for the position for which President-elect Trump has selected him.Sen. Sessions’ record reflects his priorities clearly, and none of his work as U.S. attorney was more impactful than his sustained effort to eliminate segregation in rural Alabama and break the back of the Alabama Klan. In addition to bringing and supporting civil rights cases to fight against voter suppression and school segregation, Sen. Sessions supported the investigation into the brutal murder of an African-American teenager, Michael Donald. His efforts, in coordination with state authorities, ensured that the perpetrator — the son of the Alabama Klan’s leader — received a capital sentence. With those facts laid out for all of us to see, it would be unconscionable for Sen. McCaskill to join in any effort to disparage Sen. Sessions’ character.-Bev Ehlen, Warrenton
