Sen. Claire McCaskill, who will be up for re-election next year, is raising money for her campaign at a $1 million a month clip. The Democrat is expecting a tough fight to retain her U.S. Senate seat. She already has run a television ad to keep her name in front of voters. The ad was aimed at military veterans and what she is doing to help them. The $3.1 million Sen. McCaskill raised during the second quarter of this year is the most money ever raised in a non-election year by any Missouri senator or Senate candidate, according to the Kansas City Star. Most of the money came in donations of $100 or less, her campaign said. The average was $57.Sen. McCaskill now has $5.1 million in cash for her re-election campaign. Many political observers believe Sen. McCaskill will have a tough time being re-elected because of Donald Trump’s strong showing in Missouri in last year’s presidential election. President Trump carried Missouri by 19 points. He carried Franklin County with a 70 percent favorable vote.Much depends on who the Republican candidate will be. Republican U.S. Rep. Ann Wagner of St. Louis County announced she will not oppose Sen. McCaskill. Also being mentioned as possible Republican candidates are Attorney General Josh Hawley and U.S. Rep. Vicky Hartzler. State Rep. Paul Curtman of Union is considering a run.Sen. McCaskill is no pushover, regardless of how well Trump did in the state. She has the reputation of being a fighter. She won’t go down without a strong fight. The fact that Sen. McCaskill is able to raise the money she has is an indication of her support. Her record in championing many people issues is five-star. She especially has been outfront on accountability in government, sex abuse on college campuses and in the military, and homeland security. The Missouri 2018 race for the U.S. Senate will gain marquee attention.
