Mayor Decides Board President

Posted

Two days after topping two other challengers in the April 7 municipal election, Abercrombie was nominated board president, a vote decided by Mayor Roy White. Abercrombie just began his first term representing Ward 2. Following the meeting, he stated all members of the board have to start working together. "I have to listen to all of the thoughts and take their thoughts into consideration," Abercrombie told The Record. Alderman Jim Schuchmann, who had been board president for one year, said it's unknown whether there will be better cooperation between board members. "In this situation, I'm hoping we can look at issues and decide what's best for the city," Schuchmann said. "If we have disagreements, then we have to move on." Alderman Angie Reynolds agreed, noting that she was hesitant to speculate on how the board will compromise on issues. "I knew Roy was going to undo everything the previous board did," she said. "He has fought us tooth and nail from the beginning." Reynolds had nominated Schuchmann for president, saying "he's done a good job." Only Reynolds and Schuchmann voted in support of the motion. Black and Abercrombie failed to vote. An ensuing vote was then taken on the nomination of Abercrombie. Once again, the vote was 2-0, but White's deciding vote led to Abercrombie's selection. "He's business friendly, he's citizen friendly," White said. "He treats everybody fair and equal." Immediately following the vote, White reassigned seats at the dais. He is now flanked by Abercrombie and newly elected Ward 1 Alderman Tom Black. Schuchmann now sits in the far right corner, opposite of Reynolds. Schuchmann and Reynolds had sat next to one another. Last week's meeting didn't end without some more antics. Outgoing Alderman Dave Walter, who lost his re-election bid April 7 to Black, questioned whether the new board was going to enforce city ordinances. Abercrombie responded, "Yes sir, I plan on it, but I'm going to do it fair. I'm going to spread it across the whole city and not in just one area." Walter also questioned and accused White of meeting with city officials from Warrenton and Truesdale regarding future annexation issues. White said the mayors from all three cities meet for breakfast once a month, but added "I can meet with anybody I want to." Walter wondered why White couldn't have worked on the annexation issue with the previous board. "I didn't have cooperation from you guys and you know that," White answered. Walter replied: "This is not Whiteville. This is Wright City." The meeting concluded hastily with White saying he was casting a third vote in favor for adjournment, following a motion from Abercrombie and seconded by Black. Schuchmann and Reynolds never voiced their vote.
