Wright City’s Kyle Christopher is one of the best discus throwers in the state.
He is currently ranked third in Class 3 in the discus with a season-best toss of 167 feet, 10 inches.
He broke the Wright City school record early in the season and has reset the record a number of times throughout the season.
“We haven’t even ordered a new plaque yet because he keeps breaking it,” Wright City Head Coach Sue Wright said recently.
Christopher will compete in the discus in this weekend’s Class 3 meet in Jefferson City, and hopes to come home with first-place hardware.
He plans on attending college in the fall, but sat down with The Record first after being named May’s Athlete of the Month.
When did you get your start in track? “I started throwing both the shot and discus in eighth grade.”
Favorite track event: “Throwing the discus. It’s easy to see your average go up every day.”
Biggest role model: “SLU thrower Thomas Malloy. He was always kicking my butt. We went to St. Dominic and he was throwing 150s and I thought I’d never throw that in my life. We went to every meet together.”
Plans after high school: “I want to attend college, throw the discus and major in physical therapy.
I’m looking at Missouri Baptist and Greenville in Illinois.”
Favorite meal: “A turkey sandwich with bacon, mayonnaise, cheese, oil, vinegar and all that. Homemade.”
Dream job: “I’d love to open up my own physical therapy practice.”
One place you would like to visit: “I’d love to go over to Germany.”
Favorite class: “Chemistry. “I love doing all the experiments and seeing stuff change and all that.”
What are your expectations for this weekend? “First place, definitely.”
Favorite movie: “Saving Private Ryan.”
Favorite television show: “24.”
Where do you see yourself in five years? “Hopefully out of college and throwing far in the discus and throwing for a men’s team. I don’t want to quit after college because I’ve read that you throw your strongest in your 30s, so I want to keep going and see what my max potential is.”
