Martin was born on April 2, 1946, in St. Louis, Missouri. The son of Martin Nelson Stelloh Sr. and Helen Martha (Penny) Pfenninger.

Martin (Bud) was united in marriage to Janet on June 27, 1981. They celebrated 40 years of marriage.

Martin earned the honor of Eagle Scout in 1962 and carried those traits throughout his life. Martin was a sailor in the United States Navy, stationed in Long Beach, California serving on the USS Illusive from 1967 to 1971. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Stars. After an honorable discharge from service, he worked at many different companies as an electrical engineer, until retiring to start Just a Notion Embroidery, which Bud and Jan ran together until November 2021.
