The city of Marthasville plans to install concrete swales at Country View Lane and Southridge Court to keep water from deteriorating the roads.Mayor David Lange said water that collects near the intersection of Country View and Hiawatha Street causes potholes to form.Swales, shallow trenches, would channel that water away.Potholes are caused by water in the soil beneath a roadway, especially during cold weather.Potholes are also a problem at Southridge Court, and have been a known issue, Lange said.“We addressed this two years ago. Aldermen at the time voted against it. They didn’t want to spend the money to do (the work),” Lange said. After it rains, the soil at those areas stays wet for several days, in part because of nearby sump pumps, Lange added.Swales would channel that water away.East Ward Alderman Nick Lange said Northridge Drive and Grand Avenue have similar drainage issues at their intersections with Hiawatha Street. However, he said it wouldn’t make sense to install swales there because those street were recently overlaid. The swales should be considered in the future when the city has to overlay those streets again, he said.Marthasville
