Janine DavisRecord Staff WriterSeveral Marthasville streets are slated to get new paving in October after the city’s board of aldermen approved a bid for the work during its September meeting. The low bid from N.B. West Contracting for $66,300.50 was accepted for providing a 2-inch overlay on East South Street, North and South 3rd streets, North 4th Street, North and South 5th streets, and 6th Street. The work is expected to be completed by Oct. 31.“N.B. West successfully completed paving work for us last year, so this is a continuation of what we started then,” said Mayor Jason Schantz. In addition to N.B. West, bids were received from three other companies: Available Asphalt & Construction, Busy Bee Pavement and Spencer Contracting.City Park Intersection Becomes Four-Way StopIn separate action, the board approved the installation of additional stop signs at the intersection of West Main and Two Street near City Park to enhance the safety of children playing around the park. The intersection, which currently is a two-way stop, now becomes a four-way stop.“The main issue is safety for park patrons and children, and folks coming through that intersection in cars and not having to stop,” said Schantz.“Given that the playground and old pavilions are at that corner of the park nearest that intersection, this is where we need to focus,” said Schantz.“Of all corners of the park, this is the one where we have the most children running around.”The mayor said that with the increasing popularity and use of the park, there will be more drivers in the area unfamiliar with children playing near the street, which he said makes a four-way stop all the more important. The conversion to a four-way stop is expected to happen immediately.Marthasville streets are slated to get new paving
