The Marthasville Park Board sponsored a holiday decorating contest and the winner is Jerry and Tonya Wagemann of Country View Lane.“My mom and dad did it when I was a kid,” said Jerry Wagemann. “I’ve always carried it with me.”Wagemann grew up in California and his house was decorated each year. A concrete worker by trade, Wagemann also is experienced in all kinds of skills, including electrical work. The blue and white theme is custom designed and lights are laid out individually by Wagemann. He draws out a plan each year and has already started working on next year’s design.Anna Travers, park board member, said Wagemann’s yard is “covered with everything.”“It’s insane,” she said. “You can probably see it from space and it is put together real well.”Travers, one of four judges, was happy with the turnout for this year’s contest, saying it was hard to choose a winner. Phyllis Aston and Daniel and Carolyn Barr also served as judges.“We think a lot of people were shy about entering because there are a lot of decorated houses out there,” Travers said. “We will definitely do it again next year.”Wagemann said he began putting his lights out in October. One side is meant to have a spiritual Christmas meaning with the Nativity and angels. All the snowflakes on the roof are custom made.“The tree is the hardest thing,” he said.“I have to take 24-foot poles and drape the tree. It takes me about five hours.”LED lights are making Wagemann’s decorating task much easier and safer. He said having LEDs makes it 100 percent easier. He doesn’t have breakers flipping and feels much better about the safety of his home.“I do it because I like it, not because of the contest,” he said. “Oh yeah, there are a lot of people driving by.”Wagemann said he hasn’t had lights out for two years and decided this was the year “to go all out.” His lights start coming on around 5:15 each night. He welcomes people to drive by and take a look.As the first-place winner, the couple earned a $100 prize. The other contest winners are as follows:Second Place — Rob Bleckman, $75.Third Place — Cindy Buescher, $25.Fourth Place — Mike Day.Fifth Place — Gene Ahmann.Sixth Place — Loretta Davis.Seventh Place — Mike and Karen Borgmann.
