By Janine DavisRecord Staff WriterDuring its recent round of paving work on city streets, Marthasville work crews made a surprise discovery that a bridge on one of the town’s main streets is in need of structural repairs.Officials now say this will require replacing the bridge next spring. In the short-term, Marthasville has placed a 5-ton weight limit on the bridge on South Street between First Street (Highway D) and Two Street. The weight limit is already in effect.“During street repairs this fall, we noticed part of the material on the underside of the bridge was eroding and that the beams were rusting, so we patched it well, and had MoDOT engineers come in to take a closer look,” said Mayor Jason Schantz.“MoDOT’s assessment was to do something sooner rather than later for safety’s sake, so we’ve limited the amount of weight going across the bridge while we look at replacing the structure in the spring. The city has posted weight limit signs at each end of the bridge.Schantz said he does not think the 5-ton weight limitation over the next several months poses a hindrance to trucks and farm and other heavy vehicles for which there are other routes for accessing Highway 47, such as First Street south and Main to Pecan Street.Marthasville Sets Weight Limit on South Street Bridge
