The city of Marthasville is applying for a grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to help develop an RV campground at Wessel Park along the Katy Trail.
The city is seeking to establish a park where people who want to visit the scenic Missouri River corridor can stay in an RV or go tent camping. Site plans are being developed by Cochran Engineering.
“We’re looking to have 20 full-size RV hookup lots and 10 parking-with-tent-area spots, with concrete pads, electric, water, and fire pits ... with a bath and shower house and pavilion,” explained Alderman Nick Lange. “This will be right along the Katy Trail State Park downtown, which is adjacent to that property.”
Lange added that the cabin currently on the Wessel Park property will be preserved as part of the park development, and that other areas will be left as green space that can be used for larger group camping if needed.
Lange said the city is working with Boonslick Regional Planning Commission to request a 50/50 cost-share grant from DNR to help develop the park. That development would include gravel roadways and installation of water, sewer and electrical utilities, along with construction of the restrooms/shower house.
Preliminary plans from Cochran Engineering include a note that the shower house should be a design that’s approved by FEMA to be built in the flood plain.
During the Marthasville Board of Aldermen’s March 17 meeting, city leaders discussed plans to install a small basketball court adjacent to the pavilion at Marthasville City Park on South Street. The discussion largely revolved around what surface finish to apply to the court once it is paved, and also how to light the area.
The concrete for the area will need to have sealant applied to preserve the paving, along with having stripes painted for the basketball court. Nick Lange suggested using a more advanced color coating that would have different sections of the court be blue and gray, along with the white striping.
“It’s a sport court paint system,” Lange explained. “I’d think it would look nice. ... We’d have a sharp-looking basketball court.”
Other aldermen questioned the need for spending additional money instead of just using basic sealant and striping.
“I worry that we’ll paint it up to look really nice, and then vandals come and spray all over it. Then you’re going out to try and fix it,” commented Alderman Leo Meyer.
Aldermen also discussed whether to purchase a lighting system that would be mounted on top of the basketball poles, or instead mount lights on existing park structures, or simply allow existing lights in the area to help keep the court usable for a short time after dusk.
No final decisions were made about the basketball court. Discussions will continue at future meetings.
