Marthasville readying next stage of South Street construction

Posted

The city of Marthasville is preparing to begin the second stage of a project to rebuild one of the major entry and exit points from town. Once complete, new pavement and sidewalk will connect from One Street to Highway 47 at Dollar General.

Pecan Street was rebuilt in 2019 from Highway 47 to the bend where it merges with South Street. Now the city is asking engineers to finalize construction plans between that point and One Street.

The project will not only fix the deteriorated street, but also complete a connection of sidewalks spanning the entire width of Marthasville. Sidewalk  built along South Street will connect to the new sidewalk that was installed along Highway D/Main Street in 2019 with the help of a grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT).

“You’ll be able to walk all the way from Highway  D on the east end of town, all the way down to the grocery stores, and the businesses downtown,” said East Ward Alderman Nick Lange.

Lange said the city had initially planned to get another MoDOT grant to rebuild South Street at the same time as Pecan Street. But state funding was not made available, meaning the South Street section had to be delayed until 2021.

Lange is helping coordinate the project with BFA Engineering in Washington. He said initial project plans need to be finalized to begin construction.

“The right thing to do is to get (BFA) to come in and do a workshop session to iron out what we want exactly on the road width and the parking,” Lange commented during a March board of aldermen meeting.

Lange added that the rebuild will also add parking at Marthasville City Park and correct places where the street is too narrower and difficult to have two vehicles pass each other. The overall width of the street will not increase.

One concern for the project is a property easement that needs to be acquired to build a section of sidewalk where South Street and Pecan Street meet. City officials said at least one property owner has been reluctant to give up part of their ground for the sidewalk.

West Ward Alderman Leo Meyer expressed concern about how the project would proceed if the easement can’t be acquired. Lange replied that the existing road can be rebuilt with or without the sidewalk easement, but that the city should continue to engage with the property owner to convince them to sell the easement to the city.
