Marthasville City Park playground equipment has been ordered and should be delivered and erected by July 24. Officials made the announcement during last Tuesday's board meeting. A total of $61,136.50 has been raised for the playground, which will cost approximately $60,000. The city contributed $30,000, with remaining donations coming from area businesses and individuals. With Marthasville Elementary also looking into new playground equipment from Miracle Recreation Equipment, the same company the city is ordering its equipment from, the city could receive a discounted total cost of $58,000. This would also reduce the cost for the elementary school's purchase. "Once the equipment has been ordered, it takes about four weeks for it to be manufactured and delivered," said Mayor Dale Verges. "Now, we'll have site preparation done. When you get ready to set up the equipment, each piece will have a main pier that we'll set it in. We'll prepare those in these coming weeks." Site preparation, officials said, requires mechanically inclined volunteer help. "By the end of July, we'll be close to being able to use the playground if we can get enough volunteer help," Verges said. "What you need are a couple of people who work together every day," Alderman Leo Tobben told The Record. "You don't have to tell them what to do. They know. They understand." In addition to a slide and swing-sets, the equipment, manufactured by Miracle, will include three grills, one of which has been described as a "super grill" by officials, a steel trash-can that can be mounted on a concrete base and a bicycle rack. Hutchinson Recreation and Design will be providing installation services and will also provide two free days of training for volunteers. "That's really nice that they're going to provide those two free days because otherwise we'll be looking through an instruction manual about this big," Park Board Member Don Deeker said, gesturing with his hands a foot apart. He also said he was thrilled about the quality of Miracle's equipment. "They've done some work in Joplin and even after the tornado; their playground is still intact, except for a canopy," Deeker said. A few donations are still needed for pea gravel surface material, concrete and miscellaneous items for installation, but Verges said he was impressed with the way the community pulled together. "I have to say, donations have far exceeded my expectations," he said. "Hopefully, by the end of July, we'll be hearing screaming kids on the playground." Donations can be sent to City of Marthasville, P. O. Box 21, Marthasville, MO 63357. Playground equipment should be designated in the memo line. Those interested in volunteering with installation can contact Deeker at 636-433-5474.
