Marthasville’s public works director says the city needs to upgrade its storm warning system. As the city begins discussions for the 2016-17 fiscal year budget, Brad Landwehr made a request that the city set aside some funds for a new storm siren.During the board’s April 20 meeting, Landwehr said the city’s current warning system is lacking. He said a test was done on April 12 and it was very quiet.“You guys need to get something here,” he said. “It was barely whistling.”Landwehr said some storm siren enthusiasts were in town and recording the siren. They reported it was “very, very weak,” Landwehr said.To address the issue, Landwehr said the city needs to do something and get some bids.“You need to put a plan together to get some bids to get yourselves protected over here in case a big storm comes,” he said.Landwehr said he would like to see money allocated in the budget for a new siren. He did not say how much a siren would cost.Culvert ProjectPlans to clean out a box culvert are still being discussed.Landwehr said he spoke with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers about what the city needed to do to remove debris from the culvert on Highway D between the train depot and South Street. The city had talked about buying some equipment to clean out the culvert, but decided to rent the equipment instead. The city also has bid out the project previously and talked about doing so again to ensure that it’s done right.Landwehr said the Corps informed him the city should not put the project out for bid until it’s determined if a permit is needed. Because the work would take place in a waterway, the city is unsure where its equipment can be and what work can be done.Landwehr said he and Mayor David Lange would continue to meet with the Corps to get the project figured out as soon as possible.Storm
