Marthasville Fall Festival Planned for This Weekend

This weekend’s Marthasville Fall Festival is loaded with activities, but the newest attraction on the schedule has a chance to be the most entertaining. Organizers will hold a team sorting competition on the final day of the three-day event, scheduled for Friday, Sept. 9, through Sunday, Sept. 11. The competition will feature teams of two horseback riders taking turns sorting a group of 10 cattle in numerical order. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Sunday with competition to start at 11 a.m. The team sorting competition will feature four classes — youth, beginner, master and jackpot — and is open to anyone with horses, organizers said. The winners of the youth, beginner and master classes will be eligible to compete in the jackpot class for a chance to win part of the $1,000 prize money. Organizers are expecting competitors from several surrounding counties to participate. “It’s something new to draw people and something totally different,” said committee member Dave Peters. “We are trying to bring something new for the people. It’s something for the whole family.” The show will kick off with a performance from “ShoMe Thunder,” a female horseback group that will ride in formation to several patriotic songs. All the horses used by “ShoMe Thunder” have been saved from abuse or slaughter, Peters said. Other activities that will be held this weekend include a co-ed sand volleyball tournament, co-ed youth dodge ball tournament, tractor pull, parade, car show and live music. Craft booths and petting zoo will be open from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and 10 am.-5 p.m. Sunday. A wide array of children’s activities, including a barrel train rides, bounce house, face painting and pony rides, will be held both days as well. The Marthasville Area Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Marthasville Community Club, hosts the annual event. Admission costs $7 on Saturday and $5 on Sunday for those 16 and older. Children 15 and under are admitted free. Advance tickets covering admission for both Saturday and Sunday cost $10 and are available at local businesses. Food and beverages will be sold throughout the weekend. Coolers are prohibited. “We want everyone to come to the Fall Festival and enjoy their time here,” Peters said. “We hope everyone brings their families out. “We got a lot of things going on both days for the kids. We do this to get the whole community together.” The weekend festivities begin this Friday with a chili supper at St. Paul's United Church of Christ from 5-7 p.m. with a card party to follow. On Saturday, the co-ed sand volleyball tournament and youth dodge ball tournament will begin at 10 a.m. In the afternoon, the Marthasville Volunteer Fire Department will host firemen’s games at 1 p.m. featuring local fire departments. At 4 p.m., the Young Farmers Association is sponsoring a field class tractor pull. From 7-11 p.m., Schmitt’s and Grins will perform under the ballpark pavilion On Sunday, the parade will be held beginning at noon at Marthasville Elementary School. The route will circle around the city park and end at the community club. This year’s parade theme is “Let Freedom Ring.” Following the parade, a car show will be held. The first 50 cars registered will receive a free dash plaque. All cars will be eligible for attendance prizes. A washer tournament will be held at 1 p.m. with a pedal tractor pull to begin at 2 p.m.
