Marthasville Continues Search to Fill Mayoral Seat

The city of Marthasville is still seeking a candidate to fill the mayor's position left vacant when Dale Verges resigned in late December. Verges, who was absent from numerous city meetings in previous months because of a commitment with his job in Columbus, Ohio, informed aldermen via a letter of his resignation. Whoever fills the mayor's position will finish Verges' current term until April 2013. They will then have the option to run again during the election process. No aldermen have expressed interest in the position. City Attorney Chris Graville said the position of mayor will be selected with public interest in mind. The new mayor will be appointed by the board of aldermen. According to city officials, candidates can express their interest in the position during board of aldermen meetings. The next meeting will be Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. City Clerk Carla Heggemann said the mayor's position will be discussed at each meeting until it is filled. City officials urged interested candidates to attend city hall meetings. Alderman Leo Tobben said the city wants to quickly fill the position, but said it was more important that it be filled by the right person. "We need someone who is community-minded and has been to a few meetings," he said. "They need to have an idea of what's going on so it's a good idea for them to show up." Tobben said he felt there was interest in the position although no one has sought the position as of yet. "I think there were several candidates who were looking at it," he said, alluding to the large attendance at the Jan. 18 meeting. "I think they just wanted to get their feet wet and see what it's about," Tobben added. Verges' public service to the city began in 1995 as an alderman. Following the passing of Mayor Wendell Howard, Verges was appointed mayor pro tem and became mayor the following election.
