In an effort to bring more events to the community, Nathan Uetz decided to host a weekend full of baseball at the Marthasville Community Club.Three teams, including two Warren County programs, took part in the tournament.Uetz says St. Clair was originally scheduled to participate but pulled from the field late last week. Beyond the limited numbers, he says it was a successful showing in the second year of the event.“My impresssion is that it’s getting better,” said Uetz, coordinator of the Marthasville Community Club ballfields. “We want to be able to get up to eight or 10 teams and have teams from outside the area.”On Friday, Union defeated Marthasville 10-0 through six innings.Dutzow debuted with a 9-7 victory over the host team during the second game.“Even though it’s kind of a rec league thing, it’s still competitive,” said Uetz. The teams were from the Babe Ruth League out of Washington, but Uetz says he is open to teams from other leagues participating.“We’re trying to build interest,” said Uetz. “The league doesn’t give them a tournament, so we wanted to give them a tournament to compete in.”Union continued to separate itself from the field on Saturday, defeating Dutzow 14-4 through five innings in the final game of pool play.Teams were then seeded, with third-seeded Marthasville defeating Dutzow 12-11 with a walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh inning.Union then won the championship contest, topping Dutzow 9-0.The event also included a home run derby with eight participants.Dillon Meyers of Union unloaded five home runs to win the event.“The kids loved the home run derby,” said Uetz. “It’s something we can build on in the future.”
