Marthasville Alderman Pam Jensen delivered a critical missive aimed at her fellow aldermen and Mayor David Lange at a March 30 special board meeting.Jensen read a lengthy letter critical of Mayor Lange and his son, Alderman Nick Lange. She chided the mayor and aldermen for the handling of many issues, namely the treatment of City Clerk Carla Heggemann.Jensen read the letter after asking if the board had any response to her “formal complaint.” When no one responded, she talked uninterrupted for nearly five minutes. The letter began with Jensen addressing why she had left the board’s two most recent executive sessions early. Jensen and fellow Alderman Mike Kloeppel had walked out of the last two executive sessions, preventing the board from taking any action.“I will not allow the campaign by Mayor Lange and Alderman Lange to fire Carla Heggemann to continue,” she said.Jensen said she left one of the meetings because Mayor Lange had accused her of lying. She said the mayor has a “dictator” style that has created tension throughout the government.Jensen defended Heggemann and called her a “valuable” employee and she was highly trained. She said the mayor has exacerbated minor issues such as Heggemann rolling eyes during meetings, using the word “I” in emails and other things.“He has taken many incidents, which are small in my opinion, and, instead of dealing with them, he has saved them up,” she said. “He has saved up the resentment toward her and is determined to fire her.”Another issue with the mayor Jensen raised is his habit of breaking ties and siding with his son. Numerous times since Mayor Lange took office last April the board has been split 2-2 on votes with Jensen and Kloeppel on one side and Alderman Dan Grafrath and Nick Lange on the other. At the March 6 meeting, Mayor Lange broke two ties and each time sided with Grafrath and Nick Lange. Later in the March 30 meeting, he did the same thing.Alderman Nick Lange also was the target of Jensen’s letter. She said he sends “rude glares of hatred” to her and City Attorney Jamis Kresyman. Additionally Jensen cited Alderman Lange’s rude responses of Kresyman’s legal advice and other people speaking during meetings.Jensen also alleged Nick Lange has a personal issue with Heggemann that has carried over to the city. She said Alderman Lange is friends with Heggemann’s ex-husband and that has caused problems.“Carla has been targeted and I’m personally tired of it,” she said.Jensen said she would like the “witchhunt” for Heggemann to stop and the mayor to work on his communications skills. She said the board should work together and should strive for a “united” board.Mayor Lange had no response to Jensen’s letter during the meeting. After the meeting, he declined to comment.“I wouldn’t know where to start,” he said.Alderman Lange said if Jensen wanted a more united board, she should consider not having so many sidebars with Kreysman.“Everybody is entitled to their opinion,” he said. “I guess she doesn’t pay attention in city meetings and she doesn’t remember when I asked my own wife, who was making a comment, I told her she’s not allowed to make comments during our meeting.”Pam Jensen
