Marthasville aldermen discuss updated employee handbook

The Marthasville Board of Aldermen scheduled a workshop for April 1 to discuss an updated employee handbook.

At their March 25 meeting, the board members discussed that they had already had one workshop to discuss a new employee handbook.

Alderman Nicholas Lange said the topics discussed at the previous meeting included issues such as employee classifications, and updated PTO policy, paid holidays for full-time employees, paid bereavement leave and a host of other topics. The city has three full-time employees. Lange suggested hosting another workshop to finalize a proposed draft of the employee handbook that would also include looking at retirement and other benefit offerings for full-time employees that could then be fine tuned and implemented as city policy.

“We want to build policy and benefits offerings to attract and retain the best employees to set the city up for future success,” Lange said.

One of the goals, Lange said, is to implement policies that make Marthasville what he called “best in class.” Lange expounded on this theory to explain that the city seeks to be the best in everything it does in comparison with other local cities and the county and he feels like creating a strong policy and benefits for employees would allow Marthasville the opportunity to be a destination employment opportunity.

The board also discussed that they had an individual doing work for the city that was using his own vehicle to perform work for the city. The board said that anyone doing any work for the city should be using city vehicles for any work performed going forward for liability reasons.

The board also discussed the ongoing work projects on Depot Street and 5th Street that have been going on for several months now. Mayor David Lange said those projects are proceeding in a timely manner.
