The Marthasville Board of Aldermen has agreed to pave four city streets. The board at its Aug. 19 meeting, unanimously awarded a contact to N.B. West to pave Hiawatha Street, Northridge Drive, Brookside Drive and Grand Avenue. The board sought bids on two other streets, but elected to put off work on Norcoa Avenue and Lakeshore Drive in order to control costs.N.B. West estimates the four roads will cost a total of $129,252.60. To add Norcoa and Lakeshore, the city would have to pay an additional $37,455.24.Mayor David Lange said the city has $200,000 in the budget for all street work.Lange said there’s a chance Norcoa and Lakeshore still could be done if N.B. West completes the four other streets under budget. He said if the four streets require less asphalt than anticipated, the board will reconsider the two streets excluded from the project.Lange and the board opted to pick the busiest roads that needed the most work.Lange said N.B. West will also provide repairs to the road. Brookside Drive could cost an estimated $1,530 based on proposed repairs to the road base.Any repairs will cost $306 per cubic yard, under West’s contract. The board declined any extras N.B. West proposed in the bid. N.B. West gave prices for two kinds of fabric that is supposed to extend the life of the roads, but the board opted against spending the additional money. The fabric would have cost between $2.27 and $2.94 per square yard. N.B. West estimated it would be doing 13,400 square yards worth of paving meaning the fabric would cost at least an additional $29,519.08“There’s no guarantee that the stuff works,” Lange said.Road Paving
