The Marthasville Board of Aldermen voted unanimously to approve the closure of two bridges on Two Street and Four Street during their regularly scheduled meeting last Wednesday.
Mayor David Lange said currently the city has placed cones to block off the two bridges since last month. Lange said there had been repairs to both bridges, but both bridges are one lane and are constantly sustaining damage from vehicles hitting the corners of the bridges.
Lange said that since the bridges have been temporarily closed, the city has received no complaints about the bridges being closed.
Lange suggested to the board that the city may want to close the two bridges to car and truck traffic, but leave the bridges open to bicycle and pedestrian traffic.
Lange said traffic could easily go one block over from either bridge to get around the bridges.
Alderman Gary Dixon said he was okay with closing the two bridges.
During discussion on closing the bridges it was suggested that perhaps the city could place removable concrete bollards at the entrances to the bridges so if at some point city officials wanted to reopen the bridges it could be done easily by removing the bollards.
After some additional discussion Dixon made a motion to close the two bridges which was approved 3-0. Alderman Nicholas Lange was not present at the meeting.
