Marthasville Alderman Christopher DeVore has been placed on court-supervised probation after pleading guilty to three charges of violating a protection order.
Half a dozen misdemeanor charges were filed against DeVore earlier this year in Franklin and Jefferson counties, alleging that he had sent harassing messages and made online statements about a woman who has a protection order against him.
DeVore pleaded guilty in Franklin County in October to three counts of violating a protection order. Franklin County Associate Circuit Judge Stanley Williams ordered DeVore to serve two years of probation for the charges.
The three cases alleged that DeVore had sent messages to a protected person using Facebook and cellphone, as well as posting the woman’s photo and contact information on Facebook along with messages she believed were harassing or threatening. The woman told police she had received multiple messages and calls from unknown numbers as a result, according to court documents.
Two other, similar charges in Franklin County no longer appear in court records. All five cases were filed after DeVore was appointed to the board of aldermen in April this year, but before he was elected to a full term in June.
A sixth case, in Jefferson County, is still pending resolution. The victim in the above cases reported to Jefferson County deputies on Feb. 15 that DeVore had called her and allegedly threatened to harm her. The victim also showed deputies a screenshot from DeVore’s Facebook page, where he allegedly published song lyrics about killing a woman and having an alibi.
DeVore has not made an initial appearance in Jefferson County Circuit Court because of ongoing postponements due to COVID-19, according to court records. He currently has a hearing scheduled for Dec. 15.
This is the second time this year a court cased has shadowed Marthasville aldermen. Early this year, Marthasville Mayor David Lange requested the resignation of DeVore’s predecessor, Gene Jenkins, over a different set of misdemeanor charges. Jenkins had signed a non-prosecution agreement for charges stemming from misuse of a police database while he was police chief.
Under the terms of the agreement, Jenkins did not seek reelection, and resigned in April. DeVore was appointed to complete Jenkins’ term.
DeVore ran unopposed for election to a full term of office in June. He previously served on the board of aldermen from 2016 to 2018.
The Record was unable to reach Mayor David Lange for additional comment prior to publication.
