Marschel sets personal best at state cross country meet

While a faster time eluded her at Friday’s Class 4 state meet, Madelyn Marschel still had a reason to celebrate.

The Warrenton sophomore set a personal-best time of 21 minutes, 1.80 seconds at Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia. She finished 71st out of 160 runners in the girls race.

“Madelyn had a great race,” Warrenton Coach Jeremy Collins said. “She had a great week of practice focusing on a sub 21:00 pace and making sure she was as close to 100 percent as possible. She was a little disappointed that she didn’t break 21:00, but she still ran a personal best time and she was excited about that.  She ran a great race and I really don’t think she could have ran a better race.”

This was the second year in a row Marschel competed at state. Battling a knee injury for the early part of the year, she managed to get healthy and peaked at the right time. And she kept getting faster in the process.

In her previous week’s district meet, Marschel’s state-qualifying time was 22:48.40. As a freshman, she placed 105th in 21:27.90 at state.

“This year I was a little worried because she injured her knee before the season started,” Collins said. “For the first three to four weeks she had to ease back into training and wasn’t able to do all the workouts so she had a slow start to the season.  However, she worked extremely hard and as the season went on she continued to get stronger and stronger.

“So looking forward, hopefully she can have a full season where she doesn’t have any setbacks. I know she wants to break 21:00 and I think she will do it. The question is how far under 21:00 will she go? She will be pretty motivated to improve on her time and her 71st place at state. She has the attitude and the work ethic where if she wants to go after 20 minutes and a state medal she will have a good chance.”

The outlook is promising for the girls program, Collins said. Marschel will be aiming for a third trip to state and the Warriors will return a strong nucleus and will welcome some new underclassmen.

“Madelyn will lead a girls team that can be pretty good next year,” Collins said. “Our top three runners will be back and we could get some freshmen who could really help us out.  I think this will help all of them during workouts and push each other to improve throughout the season.”
