A call to check on a suspicious person led to knife threats and a fight that left at least one deputy with multiple bruises, according to the Warren County Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities have charged Adam T. Cress, 32, of Wright City, with third-degree assault against a special victim and resisting an arrest or stop, after the conflict alleged to have taken place on Saturday, Dec. 28.
According to a sheriff’s department report, a deputy was dispatched to a location on Highway M around 1 p.m. to investigate a person standing in the road, possibly holding a weapon. Upon the deputy’s arrival, the person, later identified as Cress, reportedly fled on foot.
Cress was located a short time later on a nearby property. He allegedly threatened to stab law enforcement officers with several knives, and also threatened to kill himself, the sheriff’s department said.
Cress then reportedly dropped the knives, picked up a large stick and continued to threaten officers with it, before fleeing for a second time. Deputies caught Cress and said he fought with them while they attempted to arrest him.
Cress was then transported to a hospital, where the sheriff’s department said he continued to attempt to escape and injured a deputy. Cress allegedly kicked the deputy in the knee, leg and abdomen, leaving the officer pained and bruised.
