A Lincoln County man was arrested and charged Sunday morning for allegedly stealing a MoDOT dump truck and setting it on fire. Warren County Sheriff Kevin Harrison said Jason A. McGhee and another suspect stole the vehicle from the Cappeln Road shed on Highway T in St. Charles County and "took it joy riding" until eventually crashing the truck into a utility pole on Bell Road near Poor Boy Ranch Road northwest of Wright City. McGhee, 21, of the 2500 block of Myers Road, Troy, is facing four felony counts - first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, knowingly burning or exploding, and tampering with evidence. McGhee remains lodged in the Warren County Jail. A $40,000 bond has been set. A second suspect was released pleading further investigation and application for warrants, Harrison reported. Following the wreck, in an attempt to conceal evidence, McGhee took several paper towels and wiped his fingerprints off the vehicle's interior. He then soaked the towels in diesel fuel from the truck's tank, put them back inside the vehicle and lit them on fire, according to Harrison. Harrison said two nearby residents called 911 to report a crash and fire at 6:09 a.m. The fire was quickly extinguished by one of the residents. McGhee and the second suspect were arrested as they attempted to flee the area. "A lot of thanks goes to them for calling and taking action," Harrison said. The crash and fire caused more than $1,000 in damage, Harrison said. Prior to stealing the truck, Harrison said both suspects had been attending a party on Four Wheel Drive Lane, which is located off Joerling Lane in St. Charles County. As officers responded to the residence, 50 to 60 people in attendance fled on foot. The homeowner, a 43-year-old female, was issued a summons for supplying alcohol to minors, Harrison said.
