Man sentenced to 30 years in wife’s shooting death

An Audrain County man was sentenced to 30 years in prison in the 2014 shooting death of his wife.Ricky Harding, 35, of Mexico, was sentenced to 30 years on a second-degree murder charge at a hearing last Thursday. Judge Keith Sutherland also sentenced Harding to 10 years on unlawful possession of a firearm, five years on domestic assault and one year each for four child endangerment charges. The sentences were ordered to run concurrently.In December, a Warren County jury found Harding guilty of the charges at the conclusion of a five-day trial. The trial and sentencing was held in Warrenton after a change of venue was granted.Summer Hickman Harding, 34, was shot May 25, 2014, in the pelvic region at the couple’s rural Audrain Country home. She was pronounced dead after being taken to SSM St. Mary’s Hospital-Audrain.Police said the couple were wrestling over a pistol during an argument.After the shooting, authorities said Harding drug his wife’s body to a garage, where she was found in a pool of blood. Harding fled the scene without calling for help, police reported. He left four children, ranging in age from 6 to 12, alone in the residence.Harding claimed his wife accidentally shot herself.After last Thursday’s sentencing, Harding shouted a profanity as he was being taken to a holding cell. His attorney said the conviction will be appealed.Audrain County Prosecuting Attorney Jacob Shellabarger called the sentence a “just, fair and firm result.”Ricky Harding
