Man receives 37 years for stealing purse, resisting arrest

Record Managing Editor A Warrenton man with an extensive criminal history was sentenced to 37 years in prison for stealing a woman’s purse and resisting arrest. Circuit Judge Wes Dalton sentenced James W. Lewis to 30 years on the felony second-degree robbery charge and seven years on the resisting arrest charge. Dalton ordered the sentences to run consecutively during a hearing held Tuesday. A Warren County jury found Lewis guilty on May 22. They made their decision after deliberating for about two hours in a one-day trial. Police responded to the Warrenton Kroger store on April 6, 2013, after the female victim reported she had been robbed of her purse upon leaving the grocery store. A man riding his bike near the store heard the victim yell, and began chasing the robber. The man eventually caught up with the robber, identified as Lewis, and subdued him until police arrived on the scene. Lewis’ prior criminal history includes convictions for drug possession, burglary and robbery, according to online court records.
