One person was killed overnight Thursday, Jan. 6, when he was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 70 while on foot.
Missouri State Highway Patrol identified the deceased man as David S. Courtway, 55, of Union. Crash investigators report that Courtway was chasing a dog from the north side of the interstate when he entered the roadway near North Spoede Lane.
The vehicle strike occurred around 9:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes of the interstate. Ambulance personnel pronounced Courtway dead at the scene at 9:42, according to a highway patrol crash report.
The highway patrol said the driver in the incident, a 22-year-old woman from Columbia, didn't see Courtway until the last second. She applied the brakes of her 2015 Honda Civic, but the front left of the vehicle struck him. The vehicle then traveled off the left side of the road and the driver sustained minor injuries, the highway patrol said.
