A Lafayette County man is charged with murder and other felony counts in a Labor Day weekend crash that claimed the lives of two Warrenton children.James Leroy Green, 60, of Odessa, was charged Tuesday with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of second-degree assault, driving while intoxicated (aggravated offender) and driving while revoked, all felonies, in the crash Sunday evening on Interstate 70 east of Kansas City.Green was being held on a $200,000 cash-only bond, authorities said.Chloe Beaird, 7, and Gavin Beaird, 13, of Warrenton, died at the scene of the 6:03 p.m. crash Their parents, David C. Beaird, 39, and Jennifer L. Beaird, 37, were seriously injured and were taken by ambulance to area hospitals for treatment. All four were wearing seat belts.David Beaird is paralyzed from the chest down, according to published reports. There was no specific information on Jennifer Beaird's condition.Green was taken into custody during the investigation of the five-car pileup in the eastbound I-70 lanes near Adam Dairy Parkway in Blue Springs.The Kansas City Star cited court records in reporting that Green was driving with a suspended driver's license and had prior convictions for driving while intoxicated.Green later told investigators that he drank three beers about an hour before the wreck, The Star reported Tuesday.The crash occurred when Green looked at his phone to swipe to change the song. He never looked up and was still looking at his phone when he rear-ended another vehicle, according to court records.According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report, Green was driving a 2000 Cadillac Escalade that struck the rear of the 2015 Hyundai Elantra driven by David Beaird.The Green vehicle then struck another eastbound car, which in turn slammed into two other vehicles, according to the report. None of the drivers of the three other cars were listed as being injured.Missouri Department of Transportation officials and officers with the Blue Springs Police Department also assisted at the crash scene.Charged
