A Warrenton man who allegedly stole nearly $1,600 from his employer is facing a felony charge in Warren County Circuit Court, according to the prosecuting attorney’s office. Richard J. Smith Jr., 29, is charged with one count of stealing, according to court records. Bond in the case was set at $10,000. On May 1, Ian Quinn, store manager at the Discount Smoke Shop, provided Warrenton police with documents concerning an employee who was suspected of stealing money from the business’ cash register, according to a probable cause statement. The employee was identified as Smith, police said.The Discount Smoke Shop is at 523 Warren County Shopping Center. Video surveillance showed Smith taking money from the register after cancelling customer transactions on three different occasions, according to police. After reviewing all register receipts and store inventory, Quinn calculated that Smith allegedly took $1,594.27, according to the probable cause statement. Shortly after all documentation was turned in to police, authorities arrested Smith.During an interview with police, Smith stated that he stole the money by canceling store customers’ transactions.
