Man bites off finger, charged with assault

A Warren County man who allegedly bit off part of another person’s finger has been charged with assault.Ian L. Maples, 23, Wright City, allegedly admitted to causing the injury, according to the Warren County Sheriff’s Department.He was charged June 25 with second-degree assault for the incident, which happened in February.Maples and the victim got into a confrontation around 9 p.m. at a residence off of Trails End Drive in Wright City Feb. 8, according to law enforcement. The victim reportedly tried to call 911, but had the phone knocked out of his hand.The two men got into a fight that moved from inside the residence to the outside. That’s when Maples allegedly bit the other man’s right pinky finger and severed the top knuckle from the rest of the finger.A sheriff’s deputy who arrived at the residence observed blood outside and a broken phone in the living room, and witnesses described what had happened, according to an arrest report.Maples allegedly stated that he had bitten off the finger by accident during the fight.The warrant for Maples’ arrest includes a $5,000 bond. The second-degree assault he is charged with is a Class D felony, potentially punishable by a fine or prison sentence.Sheriff Kevin Harrison said the victim in the assault was transported to the hospital for treatment by Warren County Ambulance.
