Man accused of injuring officer pleads to lesser charge

A man charged last year for allegedly causing injury to a Wright City police officer has pleaded guilty to a lesser criminal charge.
Tyler M. Lexa, 23, of Wright City, was originally charged in November 2018 with third-degree felony assault and resisting arrest. Police alleged that an officer sustained a head injury while attempting to arrest Lexa during a traffic stop.
Lexa pleaded guilty on Nov. 5 to a lesser misdemeanor assault charge and to resisting arrest. Presiding Circuit Judge Jason Lamb sentenced him to two years of state-supervised probation.
Lexa was arrested in November 2018. The encounter started with a traffic stop near Diekroeger Park, where Wright City police said Lexa was driving 15 mph over the speed limit.
The officer making the stop determined Lexa had a warrant for a misdemeanor violation and attempted to arrest him, police said. Lexa allegedly struggled with the officer, during which the two fell to the ground.
Police said Lexa landed on top of the officer, who struck his head against the ground. The officer reported nearly losing consciousness and was subsequently placed on a two-day medical leave.
Another officer at the scene used a stun gun against Lexa and he was arrested.
