Zachary Ortho Jones allegedly entered the Comfort Inn in Warrenton and demanded money while flourishing a handgun. He was arrested by Warrenton police on Saturday, Jan. 3, at 7:40 a.m. in the 100 block of Arlington Drive in Warrenton, according to Police Chief Davis Bernard. Officers located Jones at a residence and apprehended him at an apartment following a short foot chase. Charges were filed by the Warren County prosecutor's office. Jones' first court appearance is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 12, at 9 a.m. "He was a person of interest from the beginning," Bernard said. "We were actively looking for him." According to court documents, Jones' last known address was 439 Shiloh St. in Columbia. Bernard noted that Jones had previously lived in the Comfort Inn until moving out about a month ago. Jones also had been employed there at one time. Jones was arrested four days after he allegedly entered the Comfort Inn lobby on Tuesday, Dec. 30, around 4 a.m. wearing a ski mask and pointing a handgun at the hotel employee. After the employee handed over the money, the suspect fled on foot. Officers from the Warrenton Police Department and Warren County Sheriff's Department canvassed the area following the report. The hotel employee was not harmed, Bernard said. Bernard applauded the efforts from his detectives and other officers who participated in the case. "The detective bureau worked hard on this case," Bernard said. "They followed up on a lot of leads and put in a lot of hours on this. They did a very good job with that. The patrol officers who made contact with him (Jones) kept their eyes open. It was a total team effort to get this case cleared up."
