Makenna Faubion works to improve herself, school community

Makenna Faubion has been around sports for most of her life.

From volleyball at a very young age to running in high school, Faubion has always loved to compete.

That competitive spirit took her all the way to the MSHSAA Class 4 state cross country meet, where she finished the course at Gans Creek in 22 minutes and 1 second.

Now, Faubion is taking her talents to the track.

“This is my first year,” Faubion said. “I plan to run the mile, two-mile, and 800 events, but probably not all at the same meet. I am still learning how to run each race. It’s a bit different from cross country.”

Faubion said that, even though she hasn’t had all the prep time she would have liked to head into the season, she’s raring to go.

“I trained really hard during the off-season and was running really well,” Faubion said. “At the beginning of February, I had to take off for almost two months with runner's knee. I’ve been doing physical therapy and other exercises to strengthen all the muscles involved in running, but I feel behind where I wanted to start the season. My first goal is to break a 6-minute mile. I plan to get better times each meet I run.”

While the knee malady may have slowed her, that’s about all that keeps Faubion from being on the move.

Track is far from the limit of her high school existence, Faubion said.

“I am very involved,” said Faubion of her high school resume. “I am the president of the Student Council. This year, my main goal as president was to increase student participation in our activities and ensure everyone felt included. That is what (has driven) all of my decisions this year. We organize Homecoming, Courtwarming, pep assemblies, spirit days, and the Crosstown Showdown, to name a few. We’ve been told that the assemblies this year have been some of the most fun in a while. I’m proud of that. I’m also a member of NHS (National Honor Society), HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America), and FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes).”

While Faubion will head off to Crowder College to run cross country and track next school year, she still has more work to do to cement her legacy at Warrenton.

Sure, there are results she’d like to see for herself, but her aim to help others is just as important she said.

That aim starts at home.

After all, her brother Matthew has taken up the mantle of being the volleyball player in the family.

“I take partial credit for getting him into the sport,” Faubion said. “I played volleyball and my family would always bump around the volleyball outside. Matthew was good, and we would pepper all the time. Sometimes I give him advice. We always make an effort to go to each other's sporting events.”

Matthew said that having his competitive older sister help him learn the ins and outs of the sport has proven valuable.

“She played until junior year and that’s when I first found out about it,” Matthew Faubion said. “I started practicing with her. She’s really competitive and she tries her best at everything she does. She puts all her time and effort into what she does. I’m really impressed with her.”
